Helicopters are undeniably amazing. These incredible machines can hover in the air—a skill once only seen in hummingbirds and insects. For many, helicopters are one of the most exciting and efficient ways to travel. But here in Bhutan, they mean so much more. They represent a giant leap forward in our transportation system and a boost to our economy. The launch of Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Ltd marked a new chapter for our landlocked nation, and today, we continue to bring even more value to our people and visitors.

The Geographic Challenges of Bhutan

To the world, Bhutan is a land of magic—jewel-green forests, towering Himalayan peaks, and ancient monasteries like the famous Tiger’s Nest (Taktsang Palphug Monastery). Perched on a cliffside, this 17th-century wonder is a symbol of Bhutan’s rich culture and spirituality. Every year, thousands of visitors come to explore our breathtaking landscapes, hike our trails, and experience the peace of this sacred place.

Over the years, Bhutan has opened its doors wider to the world, and tourism has played a huge role in this. By 2014, Bhutan’s two airlines were already flying nearly 250,000 passengers annually. But while tourists enjoyed easier access, the people of Bhutan still faced challenges. Our rugged terrain—steep mountains, dense jungles, and rapid rivers—makes travel difficult. Even with over 10,000 kilometers of roads built in the last 50 years, moving goods and people across the country remains a struggle.

Adding to this, Bhutan is landlocked, sandwiched between Tibet and India. Without access to sea routes, we rely heavily on land and air transport. But building airports in such mountainous terrain is nearly impossible. This is where helicopters come in. They’re not just a luxury; they’re a necessity. Helicopters can reach remote areas, deliver urgent supplies, and provide critical services like medical evacuations. That’s why the creation of Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Ltd was such a game-changer.

Since its launch in 2015, Bhutan Helicopter Services has transformed how we connect. As of 2024, we’ve safely flown thousands of passengers and logged over 5,000 flight hours. Our helicopters have become a lifeline for remote communities, a boost for tourism, and a reliable partner for businesses. Whether it’s transporting goods, supporting emergencies, or offering unforgettable scenic flights, we’re here to make life easier and more connected.

For our clients, this means speed, safety, and convenience. Imagine reaching the most remote parts of Bhutan in minutes, or experiencing the thrill of flying over pristine forests and majestic peaks. With Bhutan Helicopter Services, you’re not just choosing a mode of transport—you’re choosing a smarter, faster, and more exciting way to explore and do business in Bhutan.

Your Helicopter Scenic Tour in Bhutan will begin with a thrilling low-altitude flight over the stunning Paro Valley. As you soar above, you’ll see lush green rice fields and the sparkling Pa Chu River, which winds through the valley like a silver ribbon. You’ll fly past ancient villages, where traditional Bhutanese life unfolds below, and then marvel at some of Bhutan’s most iconic landmarks.

First, you’ll see the majestic Paro Rinpung Dzong, a 15th-century fortress that now serves as the administrative and monastic center of Paro. Just above it, perched on a ridge, is the Taa Dzong, which houses Bhutan’s National Museum. Minutes later, you’ll get a close-up view of the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Taktsang Palphug). Seeing this sacred site clinging to a cliffside from the air is an unforgettable experience—one that will leave you in awe.

Next, the helicopter will head north toward Mount Jumolhari, one of the world’s most breathtaking peaks. As you fly along the Pa Chu River, you’ll pass the historic ruins of Drugyel Dzong, a fortress built in 1649. Mount Jumolhari, standing tall at 7,320 meters, is a sacred mountain straddling the border between Bhutan and Tibet. It’s one of the highest unclimbed peaks in the world, as climbing is forbidden out of respect for the deities believed to reside there.

Your helicopter will then land at Jangothang, the base of Mount Jumolhari, where you can enjoy a quick snack, take photos, and soak in the incredible views. If you’re lucky, you might even spot herds of Blue Sheep (Pseudonayaur), a rare species found only in the Himalayas.

This Helicopter Scenic Tour is more than just a flight—it’s a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. You’ll experience Bhutan’s natural beauty, rich history, and spiritual heritage from a unique perspective. Whether you’re a nature lover, a photography enthusiast, or simply seeking an unforgettable experience, this tour is designed to leave you inspired.

Unique Solution: Bhutan Helicopter Services Ltd.

Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Ltd (RBHS) was founded on November 11, 2015, a special date chosen to honor the 60th birthday of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. Based at Paro Airport’s old hangar, RBHS operates with a fleet of advanced helicopters, including the H130, which are designed to travel across Bhutan’s challenging terrain.

In just the first six months of operation, RBHS transported over 400 passengers and has since carried thousands of individuals, including more than 40 medical patients from remote areas to the capital, Thimphu, for urgent care. This life-saving service has become a critical part of Bhutan’s healthcare system.

To make helicopter services even more accessible, the Department of Air Transport has been working to upgrade and build new helipads across the country. A 2010 study identified over 40 existing helipads in 18 districts (dzongkhags), and efforts are ongoing to expand this network. This means RBHS is steadily growing, reaching more communities and providing faster, more efficient services.

Helicopters in Bhutan play a vital role beyond transportation. They are used for search and rescue missions, medical evacuations, firefighting, disaster relief, and cargo transport. They also support government operations by transporting officials and personnel to remote areas.

Now, RBHS is entering an exciting new phase: Tourism. Our helicopters offer unforgettable scenic tours, allowing visitors to experience Bhutan’s stunning landscapes—from the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery to the majestic Mount Jumolhari—from a unique perspective. Whether you’re a traveler seeking adventure or a business professional looking to save time, RBHS provides a safe, reliable, and thrilling way to explore Bhutan.

With thousands of flight hours logged since 2015, RBHS has proven its commitment to safety, efficiency, and innovation. We’re not just a helicopter service—we’re a lifeline for communities, a partner for businesses, and a gateway to unforgettable experiences.

Choose Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services and discover how we’re transforming travel in Bhutan. Whether for medical emergencies, cargo transport, or scenic tours, we’re here to make your journey faster, safer, and more memorable. Let us take you to new heights—literally!
