Unlike most countries, Bhutan has a distinct visa system, a Sustainable Development Fee, and travel requirements that every visitor must understand. Yes — all international visitors (except nationals of India, Bangladesh, and Maldives) require a visa to enter Bhutan. The good news is that the visa process is straightforward and handled entirely by your licensed tour operator. You cannot obtain a Bhutan tourist visa independently or on arrival.
Here’s how it works: Once you book your trip with Deya Bhutan Tours, we submit your visa application to the Tourism Council of Bhutan (TCB) on your behalf. Your visa clearance letter is issued electronically, and the physical visa stamp is placed in your passport upon arrival at Paro International Airport.
The Bhutan tourist visa fee is USD 40, payable as part of your travel package. No visit to a consulate or embassy is required. Most nationalities receive visa approval within 3–5 working days of submission. We handle the entire process for you.
The Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) is Bhutan’s government-mandated fee designed to fund public services, protect the environment, and maintain the “High Value, Low Impact” tourism philosophy that keeps Bhutan extraordinary.
As of 2024 (and continuing in 2026), the SDF is set at USD 100 per adult per night for international tourists. For Indian, Bangladeshi, and Maldivian nationals, a separate rate applies.
What does this include?
The SDF contributes to Bhutan’s free healthcare, free education, carbon-negative environmental programs, and cultural preservation. When you pay the SDF, you are directly participating in what makes Bhutan the exceptional place it is.

A typical 7-day Bhutan tour from an international destination costs between USD 2,500–4,500 per person depending on accommodation standard (budget, mid-range, or luxury), group size, trekking requirements, and season. This includes the SDF, visa, guides, accommodation, meals, and transportation.

Bhutan is visitable year-round, but the two peak seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) — and for good reason.
Spring (March–May): The valley floors explode with wildflowers and the famous blue poppy blooms at altitude. Rhododendron forests turn pink and red across the mountain slopes. March and April bring the celebrated Paro Tshechu festival. Temperatures are mild and perfect for trekking and cultural sightseeing. Skies are usually clear with excellent Himalayan views.
Autumn (September–November): Many travelers consider this Bhutan’s finest season. The monsoon has cleaned the air to extraordinary clarity, and the Himalayas appear in razor-sharp detail. October brings the Thimphu Tshechu, the Black-Necked Crane Festival in Phobjikha, and some of the year’s most spectacular trekking weather. The paddy harvest fills the valleys with golden color.
Winter (December–February): Cold in the highlands, but the dzong valleys remain mild and uncrowded. The Punakha Tshechu occurs in February/March, and winter allows access to Bhutan without the peak-season visitor numbers. Excellent for budget-conscious travelers and photography.
Monsoon (June–August): The most challenging season due to rain, leeches on trails, and limited high-altitude trekking. However, the landscape turns an extraordinary lush green, and the lower visitor numbers mean a more intimate Bhutan experience at lower prices. Not recommended for trekking, but fine for cultural tours.
Our recommendation: Book for the Paro Tshechu (March/April) or the autumn October festival season for the most iconic Bhutan experience. Book 6–12 months in advance for these periods.
The minimum meaningful visit to Bhutan is 5–7 days. Shorter than this, and you will see the highlights but without the depth that makes Bhutan transformative.
