Chinese travellers in Bhutan

One of Bhutan's biggest sources of visitors

In 2025, China sent more visitors to Bhutan than any country except India and the United States. Many come for Buddhist sites such as Tiger’s Nest and Kyichu Lhakhang, and for the festivals.

Bhutan and China do not have formal diplomatic relations, but Chinese citizens can visit Bhutan as tourists in the same way as other international visitors, with an e-visa and the SDF. There are no direct flights, so most guests connect through Kathmandu or Bangkok.

Flights

How to fly from China to Bhutan

There are no direct flights from China to Bhutan, and the land border with Tibet is not open to tourists. These are the usual routes.

Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.

Visa and entry

Visa and entry rules for Chinese travellers

E-visa required

Chinese citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.

Passport

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.

SDF

USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.

Licensed guide

A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.

Insurance

Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.

Consular help

There is no Chinese embassy in Bhutan. Consular help for Chinese citizens comes from the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi.

Practical tips for travellers from China

Payments

Do not count on WeChat Pay or Alipay. Bring US dollars in cash and a Visa, Mastercard or UnionPay card. Some ATMs in towns accept UnionPay.

Internet

Bhutan does not block Google or WhatsApp. Chinese apps work normally on local data or hotel Wi-Fi.

Plugs

Bhutan uses 230 V with D, F and G sockets. Two-pin plugs often fit F sockets. Bring a universal adapter.

What to wear

Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples. Layers for cold mornings and a light rain jacket in any season.

Food

Bhutanese food is built around chilli and cheese, so ask for it mild at first. Hotels also serve Indian, Chinese and continental dishes, and vegetarian food is easy to find.

Language

Guides speak English. Mandarin-speaking guides are limited, so ask early.

Before you go

Planning notes for travellers from China

Your first day in Bhutan

Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.

Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.

What the SDF pays for

The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from China are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
