The short answer
How much does a Bhutan trip cost?
For most international visitors, a private 7-day trip in 3-star hotels costs about USD 2,500 to 3,200 per person when two people share. Upgraded hotels push that to about USD 3,200 to 4,500. Luxury lodges often take it above USD 7,000. International flights are on top.
The biggest single item is the Sustainable Development Fee, USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027. On a 6-night trip that is USD 600 each, which goes straight to the government. The rest pays for your hotels, guide, car, driver, meals and entry fees.
- Two people sharing is the best value
- Solo travellers pay more because the guide and car are not shared
- Groups of four or more pay less per person

Rules for 2027
What every visitor pays and needs
These apply to every tour in Bhutan, whoever you book with. We checked them against Department of Tourism notices in October 2026.
SDF: USD 100 a night
The Sustainable Development Fee is USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027. Children under 6 pay nothing and older children pay a reduced rate. The government has not yet said what the rate will be after August 2027.
Visa: USD 40, once
Most nationalities need visa clearance before they fly. It costs USD 40 per person and usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you.
Indian visitors
Indian nationals need only an entry permit and pay an SDF of INR 1,200 per night. Bangladeshi and Maldivian visitors follow separate regional rules.
Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice of 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint.
Certified stays only
On 22 October 2026 the Department reminded all hotels and village homestays that they need its certification before hosting tourists. We book only certified places.
Insurance is optional
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical treatment and evacuation.
Rates can change. We confirm the SDF and visa fee in writing before you pay anything.
Worked example
A sample budget for two people
Here is how a typical quote breaks down for a couple on a 7-day, 6-night private trip in 3-star hotels. The fixed government part is the same with any operator. The land arrangements vary with hotels, season and route.
- SDF: 2 adults x 6 nights x USD 100 = USD 1,200
- Visa: 2 x USD 40 = USD 80
- Land arrangements (hotels, guide, car, meals, entry fees): the remainder of the quote
- Flights to and from Paro: booked with the tour, priced by route
Where people overspend
The most common mistake is choosing luxury lodges for every night. Most guests spend the day out, so a simple, warm hotel in Thimphu and one special lodge in Paro or Punakha often gives the best value. The second mistake is too many long drives. Going east on a short trip costs time and money and leaves you tired.
Where it is worth spending
A good guide, a festival day, a night in a farmhouse, and a helicopter flight if it is on your list. A 30-minute scenic helicopter flight from Paro has been published from about USD 2,500 for the aircraft, which can be shared.
Save money
Ways to lower your Bhutan travel cost
Travel off-peak
Late May, early September and December to February have lower hotel rates and quieter sights.
Travel in a small group
The guide and car are shared, so four friends pay noticeably less each than two.
Enter by road
If you are already in north-east India, driving to Phuentsholing saves the flight to Paro.
Mix hotel levels
One special stay plus comfortable 3-star hotels elsewhere.
Stay in the west
Paro, Thimphu and Punakha need fewer nights and less driving than a cross-country route.
Book early
Peak-season flights and good hotels sell out. Early booking keeps more options open.
Indian visitors
Bhutan trip cost for Indian travellers
Indian nationals follow a different system: no visa, and a lower SDF in rupees.
| Item | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| SDF | INR 1,200 per person per night | Children under 6 exempt, reduced rate for older children |
| Entry permit | No fee | Issued at Paro airport or Phuentsholing with a passport or voter ID |
| Road entry | Via Phuentsholing | Bagdogra or New Jalpaiguri, then about 4 hours to the border |
| Flights | From Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra, Guwahati and others | Gelephu to Kolkata twice a week since December 2025 |
Bhutan travel cost questions
About USD 2,500 to 3,200 per person for two people sharing in 3-star hotels, including the SDF, visa, guide, car, meals and fees. Flights are extra.
Mainly because of the SDF, which funds healthcare, education and conservation, and because every visitor travels with a licensed guide and private transport.
With us, yes, as a separate line. Always check whether a quote includes it.
USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027. Indian visitors pay INR 1,200 per night.
Bhutan is never a budget destination, but travelling off-peak, in a small group and staying in 3-star hotels keeps costs down.
It is optional. About USD 10 to 15 per day for the guide and a little less for the driver is common.
