Best treks in Bhutan for beginners: routes, seasons and difficulty
Short, well-supported treks for first-time trekkers, from a single night above Tiger’s Nest to the classic Druk Path.
- 1 to 6 days
- Full camping crew
- Spring and autumn
Before you start
Bhutan is a good place for a first trek
Treks in Bhutan are fully supported. A licensed trekking guide leads the way, a cook prepares hot meals, and horses or porters carry the tents and kitchen. You carry a daypack. That makes it far easier for beginners than independent trekking elsewhere.
The catch is altitude. Even short treks go above 3,500 metres, and longer ones above 4,000. Choose a route that matches your fitness, allow time to acclimatise in the valleys first, and go in spring or autumn when the trails are dry.
- Licensed trekking guide and crew
- You carry only a daypack
- Best in April to May and October to November

Choosing
Which beginner trek is right for you?
Bumdra
The best first taste of camping. You climb from near Tiger’s Nest to a ridge camp, sleep under the stars, and come down past the monastery the next day. Ideal at the end of a cultural tour.
Druk Path
The classic short trek between Paro and Thimphu, past high lakes and with views of the Himalaya on clear days. Five or six days, with a high point around 4,200 metres. Good for fit beginners.
Trans Bhutan Trail
A historic route across the country, restored and reopened in 2022. The full 403 km takes about a month, but sections make excellent day hikes or short multi-day walks with nights in farmhouses.

Preparation
How to prepare for your first trek in Bhutan
Start walking regularly a couple of months before you travel, ideally on hills and with a daypack. Long walks of four to six hours matter more than speed. If you have access to stairs, use them.
Once in Bhutan, spend at least three or four days in the valleys before going high. A cultural tour of Thimphu, Punakha and Paro is the perfect warm-up, and the Tiger’s Nest hike is a good test of how you handle altitude. On the trek itself, walk slowly, drink plenty and tell your guide early if you feel unwell.
