Vietnamese travellers in Bhutan
A Buddhist kingdom one flight from Bangkok
For Vietnamese travellers, Bhutan feels both familiar and new. The Buddhism is Vajrayana, not the Mahayana tradition you know from home, but the respect for temples, elders and offerings will feel close. The landscape is something else: high passes, fortress-monasteries and pine forests.
Most guests fly from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok and take Drukair or Bhutan Airlines into Paro. We plan the connection, file your visa and pay the SDF, and a licensed guide meets you at arrivals.
- Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok, then on to Paro
- Popular around Tet and the April holidays
- Private guide and driver throughout
Flights
How to fly from Vietnam to Bhutan
There are no direct flights from Vietnam to Bhutan. Bangkok is the easiest connection.
| Route | How it works | Typical journey | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Bangkok | Many daily flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok, then Drukair or Bhutan Airlines to Paro. | About 6 to 9 hours with the connection | Daily flights from Bangkok give the most choice. |
| Via Singapore | Fly to Singapore, then Drukair to Paro via Guwahati three times a week. | About 8 to 11 hours | Useful if Bangkok timings do not work. |
| Via Kolkata or Delhi | Fly to Kolkata or Delhi, then connect to Paro. | About 8 to 12 hours | Good if you also want to visit Bodh Gaya. |
Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.
Visa and entry
Visa and entry rules for Vietnamese travellers
E-visa required
Vietnamese citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.
Passport
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.
SDF
USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.
Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.
Insurance
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.
Consular help
There is no Vietnamese embassy in Bhutan. Check which Vietnamese mission covers Bhutan, usually the one in New Delhi, before you travel.

Practical tips for visitors from Vietnam
Plugs
Vietnamese plugs do not fit most Bhutanese sockets. Bring a universal adapter.
Money
Dong cannot be changed in Bhutan. Bring US dollars and a card for hotels.
Pack warm
Paro and Thimphu sit above 2,200 metres. Bring a warm jacket even in spring.
Food
Expect rice, chilli and cheese. Rice and noodle dishes are easy to find, and hotels serve Chinese and Indian food.
Temple etiquette
Cover shoulders and knees, remove hats, walk clockwise around chortens and ask before photographing inside.
Language
Guides speak English. Tell us early if you need a guide who is used to working with Vietnamese groups.
Before you go
Planning notes for travellers from Vietnam
Your first day in Bhutan
Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.
Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.
What the SDF pays for
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Vietnam are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
