From Bangkok

The best-connected city for Bhutan

Bangkok is Bhutan’s main gateway outside South Asia. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines both fly from Suvarnabhumi to Paro, so you can choose your day and still be in Thimphu by the afternoon. For anyone living in Thailand, a long weekend plus two days of leave is enough for a real first trip.

Many travellers from Europe, Japan and Australia also route through Bangkok, so it is the city we plan around most. We hold your seats, file the visa and pay the SDF, and your guide meets you at Paro arrivals.

How to fly from Thailand to Bhutan

Bangkok has the most flights to Bhutan of any city outside South Asia.

RouteHow it worksTypical journeyGood to know
Bangkok to ParoDrukair and Bhutan Airlines fly from Suvarnabhumi to Paro. Some flights stop briefly in Kolkata, Guwahati or another Indian city.About 3.5 to 5 hoursFly in the morning for the best chance of clear weather in Paro.
From Chiang Mai or PhuketConnect in Bangkok the same day or stay overnight near Suvarnabhumi.Add 1 to 1.5 hoursAn overnight in Bangkok gives a buffer if the first flight is late.
Via KathmanduFly Bangkok to Kathmandu and on to Paro, if you want to combine Nepal and Bhutan. Two flights, often over two daysGood Himalayan views on a clear day.

Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.

Visa and entry

Visa and entry rules for Thai travellers

E-visa required

Thai citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.

Passport

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.

SDF

USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.

Licensed guide

A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.

Insurance

Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.

Consular help

Check which Thai mission covers Bhutan before you travel and keep its contact details with your documents. Expatriates should also check with their own embassy.

Practical tips for visitors from Thailand

Plugs

Thai plugs do not fit Bhutanese sockets. Bring a universal adapter for types D, F and G.

Money

Baht is hard to change in Bhutan. Bring US dollars and a card for hotels.

It is colder

Paro and Thimphu sit above 2,200 metres. Even in April, mornings can be close to freezing.

Food

Bhutanese food is built on chilli and cheese. Ask for it mild at first. Thai and Indian dishes are on most hotel menus.

Temple visits

The etiquette is close to Thailand's: cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes and hats, and walk clockwise.

Phone and data

Buy a B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM at Paro airport, or set up an eSIM before you fly.

Before you go

Planning notes for travellers from Thailand

Your first day in Bhutan

Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.

Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.

What the SDF pays for

The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Thailand are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.

Bhutan tour from Thailand: questions

About 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on whether the flight stops in India on the way.

Yes. Thai passport holders need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40, and we apply for it with your booking.

Yes. Four or five days covers Paro, Thimphu and the Tiger’s Nest hike. Add a day for Punakha.

A private 7-day trip in 3-star hotels usually comes to USD 2,500 to 4,500 per person for two sharing, including the SDF, visa, guide, car, hotels and meals. Flights are extra.

The visa and SDF depend on your passport, not where you live. Indian passport holders follow different rules, and everyone else needs the USD 40 visa.

For Songkran, March to April and October, book two to four months ahead. Paro hotels fill early around festivals.
