Bhutan visa and SDF guide 2027: how the process works, step by step

From choosing your dates to getting the visa stamped at Paro: who applies, what you pay, how long it takes and what can go wrong.

Visa to Bhutan

In short

The visa and the SDF are one process

In Bhutan the visa and the Sustainable Development Fee are tied together. The government will not issue your visa until the SDF for every night of your stay has been paid. That is why most people let their tour operator handle both: the operator collects the money, pays the SDF and the USD 40 visa fee through the official system, and sends you an approval letter.

The whole thing usually takes about five working days once everything is submitted. The approval letter is what the airline checks when you board for Paro, and the visa itself is stamped into your passport when you land.

Step by step

How to get a Bhutan visa in 2027

01

Fix your dates

The visa and SDF are issued for specific nights, so settle your arrival and departure first, ideally around Paro flight days.

02

Book a licensed operator

Choose a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. You will need a licensed guide anyway, and they handle the paperwork.

03

Send your documents

A clear colour scan of your passport photo page and a recent passport-size photo. The Department may ask for more.

04

Pay for the trip

Your payment covers the SDF and visa fee, which your operator passes to the government.

05

Receive the approval

Processing takes about 5 working days after the application is endorsed. You get a visa approval letter by email.

06

Fly and get stamped

Show the letter at check-in and on arrival. Immigration stamps the visa into your passport at Paro or the land border.

Things people ask about the visa and SDF

Can I apply for the visa myself?

Tourists can apply online through the Department of Immigration’s system and pay the SDF themselves. In practice, because you must travel with a licensed guide and stay in certified hotels, nearly everyone books through a licensed operator, who then applies on their behalf. It also means one company is responsible if dates change.

What if my dates change?

Tell your operator straight away. Both the visa and the SDF cover specific nights. Moving dates usually means amending the application. If you stay fewer nights, the SDF for unused nights can be refunded through the government process after you leave.

Does the visa guarantee entry?

No visa anywhere does. Immigration officers at the port of entry make the final decision. In practice, if your documents match your approval, entry is routine. Travel on the same passport you applied with. If you renew your passport before the trip, the application must be amended before you arrive.

Can I extend once I am in Bhutan?

Usually yes, through your operator, before your visa expires. You pay the SDF for the extra nights, and the hotels need space.

Worked example

What a family of four pays the government

Say two parents travel with a 9-year-old and a 4-year-old for 6 nights in April 2027. The government part of their trip looks like this:

Hotels, guide, car, meals and entry fees come on top, and vary with the hotels and season you choose. On our quotes the government amounts always sit on their own lines, so you can check them against these rates.

A realistic timeline

For a trip in a busy month, start talking to an operator three to six months before. Agree the itinerary and pay a deposit. About six weeks before travel the balance is paid, and the operator pays the SDF and submits the visa. The approval letter usually arrives within a week. For quieter months, four to six weeks from first enquiry to travel is often enough.

Avoid delays

Common visa mistakes

Blurry scans

A photo of a passport taken at an angle often gets sent back. Scan it flat, in colour, with all four corners visible.

Short validity

Your passport must be valid for 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Check before you book.

New passport

Renewed your passport after applying? The visa must be amended before arrival.

Leaving it late

Allow at least two weeks before travel, more in peak season.

Booking flights first

Paro flights are limited. Confirm them with the itinerary before booking long-haul tickets.

Forgetting the children

Every child needs their own passport and visa, even under-6s who pay no SDF.
