Private vs group tours in Bhutan: which offers better value?

How the two compare on price, flexibility and experience, and why private trips cost less extra than most people expect.

The key point

The biggest costs are the same either way

In Bhutan, the Sustainable Development Fee, the visa and your hotel room cost the same whether you travel privately or in a group. The only real difference is how the guide and car are shared. On a private tour, they are shared by your own party. On a group tour, by everyone on the bus.

That is why a private trip for two often costs only a little more per person than a group tour, and for four or more it can cost about the same. Private trips are also how most international visitors see Bhutan.

A middle way

Friends travelling together often form their own small private group. You get the flexibility of private travel and share the guide and car among four to eight people.

Worked example

What the difference looks like in practice

Take a 7-day trip in 3-star hotels. The SDF of USD 600 per adult and the USD 40 visa are identical on any tour. Hotel rooms cost the same whether you arrive by minibus or in your own car. What changes is the guide and the vehicle: on a private tour for two, those costs are split two ways; for four, four ways; on a group tour, among everyone on board.

In practice that means a couple usually pays a modest premium for a private trip, and a family of four often pays about the same as they would on a group tour, while choosing their own dates, hotels and pace. For a solo traveller the gap is biggest, because the guide and car are not shared at all.
