A short hop to a very different Himalaya
From Kuala Lumpur, Bhutan is one change of plane away. Most Malaysian guests fly to Bangkok or Singapore, stay a night if the timings need it, and take Drukair or Bhutan Airlines into Paro the next morning. A week of leave is enough for Paro, Thimphu, Punakha and the Tiger’s Nest hike.
We plan around the flight days, file your visa and pay the SDF. For Muslim guests we speak to hotels before you arrive about meals, and your guide plans the day around prayer times.
- Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok or Singapore, then on to Paro
- We brief hotels about halal-friendly meals
- Family trips with shorter drives
Flights
How to fly from Malaysia to Bhutan
There are no direct flights from Malaysia to Bhutan. These one-stop routes work best.
| Route | How it works | Typical journey | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Bangkok | Many daily flights from Kuala Lumpur to Bangkok, then Drukair or Bhutan Airlines to Paro. | About 7 to 10 hours with the connection | The most flexible option, with daily flights to Paro. |
| Via Singapore | Fly to Singapore, then Drukair to Paro with a short stop in Guwahati. Drukair runs this three times a week. | About 8 to 10 hours | Check the Drukair flight days before you book. |
| Via Kolkata or Delhi | Fly from Kuala Lumpur to Kolkata or Delhi, then connect to Paro. | About 8 to 12 hours | Easy to combine with a few days in India. |
Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.
Visa and entry
Visa and entry rules for Malaysian travellers
E-visa required
Malaysian citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.
Passport
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.
SDF
USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.
Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.
Insurance
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.
Consular help
There is no Malaysian embassy in Bhutan. Check which Malaysian mission covers Bhutan before you travel, and register your trip on eKonsular.

Practical tips for visitors from Malaysia
Halal food
Certified halal meat is not widely available in Bhutan. Vegetarian, egg and fish dishes are easy to find. Tell us your needs and we will speak to hotels before you arrive.
Prayer
There are very few public prayer spaces, so most guests pray in their rooms. Your guide will plan breaks around prayer times.
Plugs
Malaysian type G plugs fit many Bhutanese sockets. Bring a universal adapter for the D and F ones.
Money
Ringgit is hard to change in Bhutan. Bring US dollars and a card for hotels.
Pack warm
Paro and Thimphu sit above 2,200 metres. Mornings are cold for much of the year, so bring a proper jacket.
Dress code
Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples. A headscarf is fine to wear everywhere.
Before you go
Planning notes for travellers from Malaysia
Your first day in Bhutan
Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.
Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.
What the SDF pays for
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Malaysia are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
