From Kathmandu

The most scenic flight into Bhutan

Kathmandu to Paro is one of the shortest and best flights in the Himalaya. On a clear day you fly past Everest, Makalu and Kanchenjunga, then drop between forested ridges into the Paro valley. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines both fly the route, so it is easy to add Bhutan to a Nepal trip or to plan a short break from Kathmandu.

Nepali citizens need a visa for Bhutan, the same as most nationalities. We file it, pay the SDF and arrange your guide, car and hotels.

Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.

Visa and entry

Visa and entry rules for Nepali travellers

E-visa required

Nepali citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.

Passport

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.

SDF

USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.

Licensed guide

A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.

Insurance

Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.

Consular help

Nepal does not have an embassy in Bhutan. Check which Nepali mission covers Bhutan before you travel. Foreign residents of Nepal should check with their own embassy.

Practical tips for visitors from Nepal

Plugs

Nepal's round-pin plugs fit many Bhutanese type D sockets. Bring a universal adapter as back-up.

Money

Nepali rupees are not accepted in Bhutan. Bring US dollars or Indian rupees, plus a card for hotels.

Trekkers

If you have just trekked in Nepal you will be well acclimatised. Ask us about the Druk Path or a Jomolhari trek.

Food

Bhutanese food is close to some Himalayan dishes you know, with more chilli and cheese.

Dress code

Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples.

Two-country trips

We often plan Kathmandu, Paro and back, or Bhutan first and then a Nepal trek.

Before you go

Planning notes for travellers from Nepal

Your first day in Bhutan

Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.

Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.

What the SDF pays for

The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Nepal are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
