Switzerland and Bhutan

Two mountain countries with a long friendship

Swiss visitors often feel a connection with Bhutan, and there is history behind it. Swiss friends and development workers have been involved in Bhutan since the mid-20th century. In Bumthang you can still try Swiss-style cheese and beer made locally, a legacy of that link.

From Zurich you can fly nonstop to Delhi, Bangkok or Singapore and reach Paro the next day. We plan the connection, file your visa and pay the SDF.

Visa and entry rules for Swiss travellers

E-visa required

Swiss citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.

Passport

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.

SDF

USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.

A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.

Insurance

Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.

Switzerland does not have an embassy in Bhutan. Consular help comes from the Swiss Embassy in New Delhi. Register on Travel Admin before you go.

Practical tips for Swiss visitors

Plugs

Swiss type J plugs do not fit, but slim two-pin plugs usually fit Bhutan's F sockets. Bring a universal adapter.

Money

Swiss francs are hard to change. Bring US dollars and a card for hotels.

Phone and data

Buy a B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM at Paro airport for a few hundred ngultrum, or set up an eSIM before you fly. Coverage is good in towns.

What to wear

Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples. Layers for cold mornings and a light rain jacket in any season.

Food

Bhutanese food is built around chilli and cheese, so ask for it mild at first. Hotels also serve Indian, Chinese and continental dishes, and vegetarian food is easy to find.

Altitude

Even experienced Alpine walkers should take the first days slowly. Paro and Thimphu sit above 2,200 metres.

Before you go

Planning notes for travellers from Switzerland

Your first day in Bhutan

Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.

Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.

What the SDF pays for

The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Switzerland are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
