Worth the long journey
Italian guests tend to come for the craftsmanship and the mountains: hand-woven textiles, painted temples and dzongs built without nails, set against Himalayan valleys that feel nothing like the Dolomites.
From Rome and Milan, most routes take one stop in Delhi, Bangkok or a Gulf hub, then Drukair or Bhutan Airlines into Paro. We plan the connection, file your visa and pay the SDF, so the only thing you book yourself is the long-haul ticket, if you want to.

Flights
How to fly from Italy to Bhutan
There are no direct flights from Italy to Bhutan. These routes work best.
| Route | How it works | Typical journey | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Delhi | One-stop or nonstop flights from Rome and Milan to Delhi, then Drukair or Bhutan Airlines to Paro. | About 12 to 16 hours with the connection | Drukair has an interline deal with Air India. |
| Via Bangkok | Fly from Rome and Milan to Bangkok, then on to Paro on a daily flight. | About 14 to 18 hours | A night in Bangkok gives a buffer for weather delays. |
| Via a Gulf hub and Kathmandu | Fly through Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Kathmandu, then on to Paro. | About 14 to 18 hours | Good if you are adding Nepal. |
Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.
Visa and entry
Visa and entry rules for Italian travellers
E-visa required
Italian citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.
Passport
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.
SDF
USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.
Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.
Insurance
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.
Consular help
Italy does not have an embassy in Bhutan. Register your trip on Dove Siamo nel Mondo and check which Italian mission covers Bhutan, usually the one in New Delhi.
Budget

| Bhutan visa | USD 40 per person | Paid once per trip. We file it for you. |
| Private 7-day trip, 3-star hotels | About USD 2,500 to 4,500 per person | Two people sharing. Includes the SDF, visa, guide, car, driver, hotels, meals and entry fees. |
| Luxury lodges | Often above USD 1,000 per room per night | Peak season rates at the top lodges, before the SDF. |
| Flights from Italy to the hub | Varies by season | Book early for April and October. We can check fares for your dates. |
| Hub to Paro and back | Varies by route | Drukair or Bhutan Airlines. We book and hold the seats with your tour. |
| Tips | Optional | Many guests give their guide about USD 10 to 15 a day and their driver a little less. |
Prices are a guide, checked in October 2026. We send a written, itemised quote before you pay anything.

This is the route most first-time visitors choose. We change it to fit your flights, pace and interests.

On the morning flight from Delhi or Bangkok you land in Paro around midday. Your guide meets you at arrivals and you drive about an hour to Thimphu.

Day 3: Over Dochula to Punakha
Stop at the 108 chortens on Dochula pass at about 3,100 metres, then drop into the warm Punakha valley.
Day 4: Punakha

Day 5: Back to Paro
Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and Kyichu Lhakhang. Evening hot stone bath if you like.
Day 6: Tiger's Nest

Practical tips for visitors from Italy
Plugs
Italian type F plugs fit many Bhutanese sockets. Bring an adapter for type L plugs.
Money
Euros can be changed in Thimphu, but US dollars are easier. Bring a card for hotels.
Jet lag
Bhutan is 4 to 5 hours ahead. A stopover night in Delhi or Bangkok helps.
Altitude
Paro and Thimphu sit above 2,200 metres. Keep the first day easy.
Dress code
Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples.
Food
Bhutanese food is built on chilli and cheese. Hotels also serve continental dishes, and vegetarian food is easy.
Before you go
Planning notes for travellers from Italy
Your first day in Bhutan
Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.
Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.
What the SDF pays for
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Italy are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
