Travellers from Spain

Worth the long journey

Spanish travellers often plan around a festival. The masked dances, the crowds in their best clothes and the dawn thongdrol at Paro have a feel that people compare to the big religious festivals at home.

From Madrid and Barcelona, most routes take one stop in Delhi, Bangkok or a Gulf hub, then Drukair or Bhutan Airlines into Paro. We plan the connection, file your visa and pay the SDF, so the only thing you book yourself is the long-haul ticket, if you want to.

Flights

How to fly from Spain to Bhutan

There are no direct flights from Spain to Bhutan. These routes work best.

RouteHow it worksTypical journeyGood to know
Via DelhiOne-stop or nonstop flights from Madrid and Barcelona to Delhi, then Drukair or Bhutan Airlines to Paro.About 12 to 16 hours with the connectionDrukair has an interline deal with Air India.
Via BangkokFly from Madrid and Barcelona to Bangkok, then on to Paro on a daily flight.About 14 to 18 hoursA night in Bangkok gives a buffer for weather delays.
Via a Gulf hub and KathmanduFly through Doha, Dubai or Abu Dhabi to Kathmandu, then on to Paro.About 14 to 18 hoursGood if you are adding Nepal.

Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.

Visa and entry

Visa and entry rules for Spanish travellers

E-visa required

Spanish citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.

Passport

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.

SDF

USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.

Licensed guide

A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.

Insurance

Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.

Consular help

Spain does not have an embassy in Bhutan. Register in the Registro de Viajeros and check which Spanish mission covers Bhutan, usually the one in New Delhi.

Practical tips for visitors from Spain

Plugs

Spanish type F plugs fit many Bhutanese sockets.

Money

Euros can be changed in Thimphu, but US dollars are easier. Bring a card for hotels.

Jet lag

Bhutan is 4 to 5 hours ahead. A stopover night in Delhi or Bangkok helps.

Altitude

Paro and Thimphu sit above 2,200 metres. Keep the first day easy.

Dress code

Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples.

Festival seats

Arrive early on festival days for a good spot. Your guide will find you a place with a view.

Before you go

Planning notes for travellers from Spain

Your first day in Bhutan

Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.

Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.

What the SDF pays for

The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Spain are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
