Gulf travellers in Bhutan

Green valleys and cool air, a short flight from the Gulf

For families in Doha, Kuwait City, Manama and Muscat, Bhutan is an easy escape from the summer heat: forests, rivers and mountain air, with tourist numbers kept low on purpose. Gulf carriers fly to Delhi, Kathmandu and Dhaka, and Drukair or Bhutan Airlines take you on to Paro.

We plan the connection, file your visa and pay the SDF. We also talk to hotels before you arrive about halal-friendly meals and plan the day around prayer times. If you live in Saudi Arabia or the UAE, see our Saudi Arabia and UAE and Dubai pages.

Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.

Visa and entry

Visa and entry rules for Gulf travellers

E-visa required

Citizens of Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.

Passport

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.

SDF

USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.

Licensed guide

A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.

Insurance

Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.

Consular help

Check which embassy of your country covers Bhutan, often the one in New Delhi or Dhaka, and register your trip with your foreign ministry before you travel.

Winter break

December is cold and sunny. The Druk Wangyel festival at Dochula is on 13 December.

Practical tips for visitors from the Middle East

Halal food

Certified halal meat is not widely available. Vegetarian, egg and fish dishes are easy to find. Tell us your needs and we will speak to hotels before you arrive.

Prayer

Public prayer spaces are very limited, so most guests pray in their rooms. Your guide will plan breaks around prayer times.

Plugs

Gulf type G plugs fit many Bhutanese sockets. Bring a universal adapter for the others.

Money

Riyals and dinars are hard to change. Bring US dollars and a card for hotels.

What to wear

Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples, plus warm layers and a light rain jacket.

Families

Under-6s pay no SDF and children aged 6 to 11 pay half. We plan shorter drives for families.

Before you go

Planning notes for travellers from the Middle East

Your first day in Bhutan

Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.

Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.

What the SDF pays for

The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from the Middle East are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
