Visitors from Saudi Arabia
Cool valleys, clean air and no crowds
For travellers from the Gulf, Bhutan offers something rare: cool, green valleys, rivers you can hear from your hotel, and a country where tourist numbers are kept low on purpose. Families especially like the slow pace and the sense of safety.
Drukair’s Dubai service has been suspended through 2026, so for now the best routes are via Delhi, Dhaka or Kathmandu. We plan the connection, file your visa, pay the SDF and talk to hotels about your food needs in advance.
- One-stop routes from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam
- We ask hotels about halal and vegetarian meals in advance
- Family trips with shorter drives
Flights
How to fly from Saudi Arabia to Bhutan
There are no direct flights from Saudi Arabia to Bhutan. These routes work best.
| Route | How it works | Typical journey | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Delhi | Saudia, Air India and IndiGo fly nonstop to Delhi from major Saudi cities. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly Delhi to Paro. | About 8 to 12 hours | Drukair has an interline deal with Air India. |
| Via Dhaka | Saudia and Biman fly nonstop to Dhaka. Drukair flies Dhaka to Paro. | About 9 to 13 hours | Check the Drukair flight days. |
| Via Kathmandu | Fly to Kathmandu, nonstop or with one Gulf stop. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly Kathmandu to Paro. | About 9 to 14 hours | Good Himalayan views on a clear day. |
| Via Dubai | Drukair's Dubai to Paro service has been suspended through 2026. | Not available for now | We will tell you if it restarts for 2027. |
Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.
Visa and entry
Visa and entry rules for Saudi travellers
E-visa required
Saudi citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.
Passport
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.
SDF
USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.
Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.
Insurance
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.
Consular help
Saudi Arabia does not have an embassy in Bhutan. Contact the Saudi embassy responsible for Bhutan, usually in New Delhi, before you travel.

Sample itinerary
A 7-day Bhutan trip from Saudi Arabia
This is the route most first-time visitors choose. We change it to fit your flights, pace and interests.
Day 1: Land in Paro
Most guests from Saudi Arabia connect in Delhi or Kathmandu and land in Paro in the morning. Your guide meets you at arrivals and you drive about an hour to Thimphu.
Day 2: Thimphu
Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma, the National Memorial Chorten and the weekend market if it is a Friday to Sunday.
Day 3: Over Dochula to Punakha
Stop at the 108 chortens on Dochula pass at about 3,100 metres, then drop into the warm Punakha valley.
Day 4: Punakha
Punakha Dzong where two rivers meet, the walk to Chhimi Lhakhang through rice fields, and an optional river float.
Day 5: Back to Paro
Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and Kyichu Lhakhang. Evening hot stone bath if you like.
Day 6: Tiger's Nest
The half-day hike to Taktsang monastery on its cliff. A farewell dinner in a farmhouse.
Day 7: Fly out
Morning flight from Paro to your connecting hub, timed to your onward flight home.

Practical tips for visitors from Saudi Arabia
Halal food
Certified halal meat is not widely available in Bhutan. Many Muslim guests choose vegetarian, egg and fish dishes. Tell us your needs and we will speak to hotels before you arrive.
Prayer
Public places for congregational prayer are very limited, so most guests pray in their hotel rooms. Your guide will plan breaks for prayer times.
Plugs
Saudi type G plugs fit many Bhutanese sockets. Bring a universal adapter for the others.
Money
Riyals are hard to change. Bring US dollars and a card for hotels.
What to wear
Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples. Layers for cold mornings and a light rain jacket in any season.
Pack warm
Mornings in Paro and Thimphu can be cold in every season. Bring a warm jacket and layers.
Before you go
Planning notes for travellers from Saudi Arabia
Your first day in Bhutan
Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.
Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.
What the SDF pays for
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Saudi Arabia are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
