Can you fly directly to Bhutan from Europe or America?

The short answer is no. Here are the best connections in 2027, typical journey times, and how to book them so nothing goes wrong.

Why no direct flights

Only two small airlines fly into Bhutan

Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan, using small aircraft suited to Paro’s short runway in a narrow valley. They fly to regional hubs such as Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Kolkata and Singapore. No airline flies from Europe or the Americas to Bhutan.

So every trip from the West involves at least one connection. The good news is that the main hubs have plenty of long-haul flights, and Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India that allow some routes to be booked with bags checked through.

Booking tips

How to book the journey

Confirm Paro flights first

Paro flights are limited. Agree your Bhutan itinerary and hold Paro seats, then book the long-haul ticket to match.

Stay a night in the hub

Paro flights leave in the morning and can wait for weather. A night in Delhi or Bangkok on the way in protects the start of your trip.

Leave a gap on the way home

If your long-haul ticket is separate, leave several hours, or a night, between your Paro flight and your flight home.

Use the interlines

Drukair interlines with Thai Airways and Air India. On some routes, that means one ticket and bags checked through.

Sample journeys

What a typical journey looks like

From London

An overnight nonstop flight to Delhi, a night near the airport, then a morning Drukair or Bhutan Airlines flight to Paro. You land in Bhutan about a day and a half after leaving home, rested rather than wrecked.

From New York

A nonstop flight to Delhi takes most of a day. Spend a night in Delhi, then fly to Paro the next morning. Some guests break the journey with a few days in India.

From California

Fly across the Pacific to Bangkok or Singapore, rest for a night, then connect to Paro. Drukair’s Singapore flights stop briefly in Guwahati.

On the way home, the same applies in reverse: a morning flight out of Paro, then a long-haul flight that evening or the next day.
