Americans in Bhutan
Why so many Americans are choosing Bhutan
In 2025 the United States sent more visitors to Bhutan than any other country outside India. Most come for a week or ten days, often on their first trip to the Himalaya, and they tell us the same things: the landscape is bigger than the photos, the dzongs are still lived in, and they never felt part of a crowd.
Getting here takes planning. There are no direct flights from the US, and the last leg into Paro runs only from a handful of Asian cities, usually in the morning. We plan the whole chain with you: which hub to use, whether to stop overnight on the way, and how your Bhutan days fit around the flights.
- We check your long-haul and Paro flights fit together
- One quote with the SDF and visa shown separately
- WhatsApp contact before and during the trip
Flights
How to fly from the USA to Bhutan
There are no nonstop flights from the US to Bhutan. You fly to an Asian hub, then take Drukair or Bhutan Airlines to Paro. These are the routes that work best for American travellers.
| Route | How it works | Typical journey | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Delhi | Air India flies nonstop to Delhi from New York, Newark, Chicago and San Francisco. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly Delhi to Paro. | About 22 to 28 hours | Drukair has an interline deal with Air India, so one ticket may be possible. |
| Via Singapore | Singapore Airlines flies nonstop to Singapore from Newark, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Drukair flies Singapore to Paro three times a week via Guwahati. | About 26 to 32 hours | Good if your dates match the three weekly flights. |
| Via Bangkok | One stop in Tokyo, Seoul, Taipei or the Gulf to Bangkok. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly Bangkok to Paro most days. | About 26 to 34 hours | The most flexible option, with a choice of flights to Paro. |
| Via Kathmandu | One or two stops to Kathmandu, then a short flight to Paro. | About 28 to 34 hours | Easy to combine with a Nepal trip. |
Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.
Visa and entry
Visa and entry rules for American travellers
E-visa required
US citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.
Passport
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.
SDF
USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.
Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.
Insurance
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.
Consular help
There is no US embassy in Bhutan. Consular help for American citizens comes from the US Embassy in New Delhi. Check travel.state.gov before you go.

What a Bhutan trip from the USA costs in 2027
Bhutan is priced differently from most countries. The government fee is fixed, and the rest depends on hotels, season and group size.

| Private 7-day trip, 3-star hotels | About USD 2,500 to 4,500 per person | Two people sharing. Includes the SDF, visa, guide, car, driver, hotels, meals and entry fees. |
| Luxury lodges | Often above USD 1,000 per room per night | Peak season rates at the top lodges, before the SDF. |
| Flights from the USA to the hub | Varies by season | Book early for April and October. We can check fares for your dates. |
| Hub to Paro and back | Varies by route | Drukair or Bhutan Airlines. We book and hold the seats with your tour. |
| Tips | Optional | Many guests give their guide about USD 10 to 15 a day and their driver a little less. |
Prices are a guide, checked in October 2026. We send a written, itemised quote before you pay anything.
Sample itinerary
A 7-day Bhutan trip from the USA
This is the route most first-time visitors choose. We change it to fit your flights, pace and interests.
Day 1: Land in Paro
Most American guests spend a night in Bangkok, Delhi or Singapore first, because Paro flights leave in the morning. Your guide meets you at arrivals and you drive about an hour to Thimphu.
Day 2: Thimphu
Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma, the National Memorial Chorten and the weekend market if it is a Friday to Sunday.
Day 3: Over Dochula to Punakha
Stop at the 108 chortens on Dochula pass at about 3,100 metres, then drop into the warm Punakha valley.
Day 4: Punakha
Punakha Dzong where two rivers meet, the walk to Chhimi Lhakhang through rice fields, and an optional river float.
Day 5: Back to Paro
Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and Kyichu Lhakhang. Evening hot stone bath if you like.
Day 6: Tiger's Nest
The half-day hike to Taktsang monastery on its cliff. A farewell dinner in a farmhouse.
Day 7: Fly out
Morning flight from Paro to your connecting hub, timed to your onward flight home.
When to go
Best time to visit Bhutan from the USA
Spring break
March is a good fit for spring break. Paro Tshechu is expected on 18 to 22 March 2027.
Summer
June to August is the monsoon. Green valleys and few visitors, but treks are muddy and views come and go.
Fall and Thanksgiving
October and November have the clearest skies. Thanksgiving falls on 25 November 2027, right in the dry season.
Winter holidays
December and January are cold but sunny. Black-necked cranes winter in Phobjikha, and hotels are quieter.

Practical tips for American visitors
Plugs and voltage
Bhutan runs on 230 V with type D, F and G sockets. US plugs need an adapter, and check that your chargers handle 230 V.
Money
Bring US dollars in newer, undamaged notes, plus a Visa or Mastercard. The ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee. Cards work in larger hotels and shops, but carry cash for villages.
Phone and data
Buy a B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM at Paro airport for a few hundred ngultrum, or set up an eSIM before you fly. Coverage is good in towns.
What to wear
Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples. Layers for cold mornings and a light rain jacket in any season.
Food
Bhutanese food is built around chilli and cheese, so ask for it mild at first. Hotels also serve Indian, Chinese and continental dishes, and vegetarian food is easy to find.
Jet lag
Bhutan is 10 to 11 hours ahead of New York and 13 to 14 ahead of Los Angeles. A night in your hub city helps.
Before you go
Planning notes for travellers from the USA
Your first day in Bhutan
Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.
Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.
What the SDF pays for
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from the USA are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
