Australians in Bhutan
Closer than most Himalayan trips
Australia was one of Bhutan’s ten biggest source markets in 2025. Compared with Europe or North America, the trip is short: a single long-haul flight to Singapore or Bangkok, then a few hours to Paro. Many Australians manage a week in Bhutan inside their annual leave without losing days to travel.
Since October 2025, Thai Airways and Drukair have an interline agreement, and the airlines named Perth, Melbourne and Sydney among the cities that can now connect through Bangkok without re-checking bags. We look at both the Bangkok and Singapore options for your dates.
- Short total journey compared with Europe or the US
- School holiday dates line up well with festivals
- Trekking and walking trips are popular with Australian guests
Flights
How to fly from Australia to Bhutan
There are no direct flights from Australia to Bhutan yet. Fly to Singapore, Bangkok or Delhi, then take Drukair or Bhutan Airlines to Paro.
| Route | How it works | Typical journey | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Bangkok | Thai Airways and Qantas fly nonstop from major Australian cities to Bangkok. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly Bangkok to Paro most days. | About 13 to 18 hours | Thai Airways and Drukair interline, with bags checked through from Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. |
| Via Singapore | Singapore Airlines and Qantas fly nonstop from all major cities. Drukair flies Singapore to Paro three times a week via Guwahati. | About 13 to 18 hours | Ideal on the Drukair flight days. |
| Via Delhi | Air India and Qantas fly nonstop from Sydney and Melbourne to Delhi. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly Delhi to Paro. | About 16 to 22 hours | Easy to combine with India. |
| From Perth | Nonstop to Singapore or Bangkok in about 5 to 6 hours, then Paro. | About 11 to 15 hours | The shortest journey from Australia. |
Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.
Visa and entry
Visa and entry rules for Australian travellers
E-visa required
Australian citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.

Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.
Insurance
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.

Practical tips for Australian visitors
Plugs
Australian type I plugs do not fit. Bring an adapter for Bhutan's D, F and G sockets. The voltage, 230 V, is the same.
Money
Bring US dollars in newer, undamaged notes, plus a Visa or Mastercard. The ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee. Cards work in larger hotels and shops, but carry cash for villages.
Phone and data
Buy a B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM at Paro airport for a few hundred ngultrum, or set up an eSIM before you fly. Coverage is good in towns.
What to wear
Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples. Layers for cold mornings and a light rain jacket in any season.
Food
Bhutanese food is built around chilli and cheese, so ask for it mild at first. Hotels also serve Indian, Chinese and continental dishes, and vegetarian food is easy to find.
Time difference
Bhutan is 4 hours behind Sydney (5 in daylight saving) and 2 hours behind Perth.
Before you go
Planning notes for travellers from Australia
Your first day in Bhutan
Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.
Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.
What the SDF pays for
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Australia are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.

Bhutan tour from Australia: questions
Yes. Australian passport holders need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40, and we apply for it once your trip is confirmed.
Fly to Bangkok or Singapore and connect to Paro. Since 2025 Thai Airways and Drukair interline through Bangkok, which makes the connection simpler.
About 11 to 18 hours of travel, depending on your city and connection. From Perth it is the shortest.
A private 7-day trip in 3-star hotels usually comes to USD 2,500 to 4,500 per person for two sharing, including the SDF, visa, guide, car, hotels and meals. Flights are extra.
June to August is Bhutan’s monsoon, which is not ideal for treks. September to November and April to May are better.
It is not compulsory for Bhutan since April 2024, but we recommend it, especially with medical evacuation cover.
