A long way to come, so make it a proper trip
From New Zealand, Bhutan is a full day of travel, so most Kiwi guests stay at least ten days. That gives time for western Bhutan, the temples of Bumthang, and often a trek: the Druk Path or the Jomolhari route suit people who know the Tongariro Crossing or a Great Walk.
The simplest route is Auckland to Singapore, then Drukair to Paro via Guwahati. We plan the connection, file your visa and pay the SDF.
- Auckland to Singapore, then on to Paro
- Treks suit Great Walk regulars
- Ten days or more recommended
Flights
How to fly from New Zealand to Bhutan
There are no direct flights from New Zealand to Bhutan. These routes work best.
| Route | How it works | Typical journey | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Singapore | Nonstop flights from Auckland to Singapore, then Drukair to Paro via Guwahati three times a week. | About 17 to 20 hours with the connection | A night in Singapore helps with the long first leg. |
| Via Australia and Bangkok | Fly to Sydney or Melbourne, then on to Bangkok and Paro. | Two stops, about 20 to 26 hours | Daily flights from Bangkok give flexibility. |
| Via Delhi | One-stop routes to Delhi through Asia or the Gulf, then on to Paro. | About 20 to 26 hours | Good if you are adding India. |
Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.
Visa and entry
Visa and entry rules for New Zealand travellers
E-visa required
New Zealand citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.
Passport
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.
SDF
USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.
Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.
Insurance
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.
Consular help
New Zealand does not have an embassy in Bhutan. Register your trip on SafeTravel and check which New Zealand mission covers Bhutan, usually the one in New Delhi.
Budget

| Bhutan visa | USD 40 per person | Paid once per trip. We file it for you. |
| Private 7-day trip, 3-star hotels | About USD 2,500 to 4,500 per person | Two people sharing. Includes the SDF, visa, guide, car, driver, hotels, meals and entry fees. |
| Luxury lodges | Often above USD 1,000 per room per night | Peak season rates at the top lodges, before the SDF. |
| Flights from New Zealand to the hub | Varies by season | Book early for April and October. We can check fares for your dates. |
| Hub to Paro and back | Varies by route | Drukair or Bhutan Airlines. We book and hold the seats with your tour. |
| Tips | Optional | Many guests give their guide about USD 10 to 15 a day and their driver a little less. |
Prices are a guide, checked in October 2026. We send a written, itemised quote before you pay anything.

A 7-day Bhutan trip from New Zealand
This is the route most first-time visitors choose. We change it to fit your flights, pace and interests.
Day 1: Land in Paro
On the Drukair flight from Singapore you land in Paro in the afternoon. Your guide meets you at arrivals and you drive about an hour to Thimphu.

Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma, the National Memorial Chorten and the weekend market if it is a Friday to Sunday.
Day 3: Over Dochula to Punakha
Stop at the 108 chortens on Dochula pass at about 3,100 metres, then drop into the warm Punakha valley.
Day 4: Punakha
Punakha Dzong where two rivers meet, the walk to Chhimi Lhakhang through rice fields, and an optional river float.
Day 5: Back to Paro
Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and Kyichu Lhakhang. Evening hot stone bath if you like.
Day 6: Tiger's Nest
The half-day hike to Taktsang monastery on its cliff. A farewell dinner in a farmhouse.

Practical tips for visitors from New Zealand
Plugs
New Zealand plugs do not fit Bhutanese sockets. Bring a universal adapter.
Money
NZ dollars are hard to change. Bring US dollars and a card for hotels.
Jet lag
Bhutan is 6 to 7 hours behind. Plan a stopover night in Singapore or Bangkok.
Trekking
Bring your own boots and poles. We supply tents, crew and pack animals.
Altitude
Paro and Thimphu sit above 2,200 metres. Treks go much higher, so we build in acclimatisation days.
Dress code
Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples.
Before you go
Planning notes for travellers from New Zealand
Your first day in Bhutan
Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.
Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.
What the SDF pays for
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from New Zealand are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
