Walking, culture and very few crowds
Germany was among Bhutan’s ten biggest source countries in 2025. German guests often come for the hiking, from day walks to cliffside monasteries to the Druk Path and Jomolhari treks, and for the festivals in spring and autumn.
From Frankfurt or Munich you can fly nonstop to Delhi or Bangkok and reach Paro the next day. We plan the connection, file your visa, pay the SDF and send one clear quote.
- Nonstop flights from Frankfurt and Munich to the hubs
- Treks with licensed trekking guides and full crew
- Small private groups, never large coaches
Flights
How to fly from Germany to Bhutan
There are no direct flights from Germany to Bhutan. These routes work best.
| Route | How it works | Typical journey | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Delhi | Lufthansa and Air India fly nonstop from Frankfurt to Delhi, and Lufthansa also from Munich. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly Delhi to Paro. | About 14 to 20 hours | Drukair has an interline deal with Air India. |
| Via Bangkok | Thai Airways flies nonstop from Frankfurt and Munich to Bangkok. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly Bangkok to Paro most days. | About 16 to 22 hours | Thai Airways and Drukair interline. |
| Via the Gulf | One stop in the Gulf to Delhi, Kathmandu or Bangkok, from Berlin, Hamburg, Düsseldorf and other cities. | About 18 to 26 hours | Often the best fares from smaller airports. |
Only Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly into Bhutan. Paro takes almost all international flights, and Gelephu has had a twice-weekly flight to Kolkata since December 2025. Drukair has interline agreements with Thai Airways and Air India, so some routings can be booked on one ticket with bags checked through. Schedules change by season, so we confirm them for your dates.
Visa and entry
Visa and entry rules for German travellers
E-visa required
German citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.
Passport
Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.
SDF
USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.
Licensed guide
A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.
Insurance
Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.
Consular help
Germany does not have an embassy in Bhutan. Consular help comes from the German Embassy in New Delhi. Register with the Elefand list before you travel.

Sample itinerary
A 7-day Bhutan trip from Germany
This is the route most first-time visitors choose. We change it to fit your flights, pace and interests.
Day 1: Land in Paro
From Germany most guests arrive in Delhi or Bangkok in the evening, stay one night and fly to Paro in the morning. Your guide meets you at arrivals and you drive about an hour to Thimphu.
Day 2: Thimphu
Tashichho Dzong, the Buddha Dordenma, the National Memorial Chorten and the weekend market if it is a Friday to Sunday.
Day 3: Over Dochula to Punakha
Stop at the 108 chortens on Dochula pass at about 3,100 metres, then drop into the warm Punakha valley.
Day 4: Punakha
Punakha Dzong where two rivers meet, the walk to Chhimi Lhakhang through rice fields, and an optional river float.
Day 5: Back to Paro
Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and Kyichu Lhakhang. Evening hot stone bath if you like.
Day 6: Tiger's Nest
The half-day hike to Taktsang monastery on its cliff. A farewell dinner in a farmhouse.
Day 7: Fly out
Morning flight from Paro to your connecting hub, timed to your onward flight home.
When to go
Best time to visit Bhutan from Germany
Easter holidays
Easter falls on 28 March 2027, just after Paro Tshechu (18 to 22 March). Rhododendrons start in April.
Summer holidays
July and August are the monsoon. Fine for culture, not ideal for treks.
Autumn holidays
October is the best trekking month. Thimphu Tshechu is expected on 10 to 12 October 2027.
Christmas
Cold, clear and quiet, with cranes in Phobjikha.
Good to know
Practical tips for German visitors
Plugs and power
Bhutan uses 230 V with type D, F and G sockets. European two-pin plugs usually fit the F sockets, but bring an adapter for the D and G ones.
Money
Bring US dollars in newer, undamaged notes, plus a Visa or Mastercard. The ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee. Cards work in larger hotels and shops, but carry cash for villages.
Phone and data
Buy a B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM at Paro airport for a few hundred ngultrum, or set up an eSIM before you fly. Coverage is good in towns.
What to wear
Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples. Layers for cold mornings and a light rain jacket in any season.
Food
Bhutanese food is built around chilli and cheese, so ask for it mild at first. Hotels also serve Indian, Chinese and continental dishes, and vegetarian food is easy to find.
Language
Guides speak English. A few German-speaking guides work in Bhutan, so ask early if you would like one.
Before you go
Planning notes for travellers from Germany
Your first day in Bhutan
Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.
Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.
What the SDF pays for
The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from Germany are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.
