British travellers in Bhutan

A long way from London, and worth every hour

The UK was one of the five biggest sources of visitors to Bhutan in 2025 after India. British guests tend to come for the walking, the festivals and the feeling that the country has kept its own pace, and many add a few days in India or Nepal on the same trip.

From London you can fly nonstop to Delhi, Bangkok or Singapore and connect to Paro the next morning. We plan the connection, file your visa and pay the SDF, so the only thing you book yourself is the long-haul ticket, if you want to.

Visa and entry

Visa and entry rules for UK travellers

E-visa required

British citizens need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and approval usually takes about 5 working days. We apply for you once your trip is booked.

Passport

Your passport should be valid for at least 6 months after you leave Bhutan. Send us a clear scan of the photo page and a passport-style photo.

SDF

USD 100 per adult per night until 31 August 2027, paid to the government through us. Children aged 6 to 11 pay USD 50.

Licensed guide

A Department of Tourism notice issued on 8 April 2026 confirms that visitors travel with a licensed guide beyond the first checkpoint. Your guide is included in every Deya trip.

Insurance

Travel insurance has not been compulsory since 23 April 2024. We still recommend cover for medical evacuation, especially if you plan to trek.

Consular help

There is no British embassy in Bhutan. Consular help comes from the British High Commission in New Delhi. Check the FCDO travel advice for Bhutan before you go.

Practical tips for British visitors

Plugs

Good news: many Bhutanese sockets are type G, the same as the UK. Others are type D or F, so pack one universal adapter too.

Money

Bring US dollars in newer, undamaged notes, plus a Visa or Mastercard. The ngultrum is pegged to the Indian rupee. Cards work in larger hotels and shops, but carry cash for villages.

Phone and data

Buy a B-Mobile or TashiCell SIM at Paro airport for a few hundred ngultrum, or set up an eSIM before you fly. Coverage is good in towns.

What to wear

Long sleeves and long trousers or skirts for dzongs and temples. Layers for cold mornings and a light rain jacket in any season.

Food

Bhutanese food is built around chilli and cheese, so ask for it mild at first. Hotels also serve Indian, Chinese and continental dishes, and vegetarian food is easy to find.

Time difference

Bhutan is 6 hours ahead of the UK in winter and 5 hours ahead in summer.

Before you go

Planning notes for travellers from the UK

Your first day in Bhutan

Paro sits at about 2,200 metres, and Thimphu is a little higher. Most people feel fine, but the first afternoon is not the time for a big hike. We keep day one light: a walk around Thimphu, an early dinner and a good night’s sleep. The Tiger’s Nest hike comes near the end of the trip, when you are used to the altitude.

Flights into Paro depend on the weather, because pilots land by sight between the ridges. If your arrival moves, we move the plan with it. That is one reason we suggest a buffer night in your hub city on the way in, and not booking the tightest possible connection on the way home.

What the SDF pays for

The Sustainable Development Fee is paid to the Government of Bhutan, not to us. It funds free healthcare and education for Bhutanese citizens, forest protection and the upkeep of the dzongs and trails you will visit. It is also why sites like Punakha Dzong never feel crowded. Bhutan had 209,376 tourist arrivals in 2025, from 157 countries. Travellers from the UK are a small part of that, which makes each visit feel personal.

Bhutan tour from the UK: questions

Yes. UK passport holders need visa clearance before travel. The fee is USD 40 and we apply for it as part of your booking.

No. Fly nonstop from London to Delhi, Bangkok or Singapore, then connect to Paro on Drukair or Bhutan Airlines.

Around 15 to 22 hours via Delhi or Bangkok, depending on the connection. An overnight stop in the hub is common because Paro flights leave in the morning.

A private 7-day trip in 3-star hotels usually comes to USD 2,500 to 4,500 per person for two sharing, including the SDF, visa, guide, car, hotels and meals. Flights from the UK are extra.

Pounds are harder to exchange than US dollars. Bring dollars or Indian rupees in cash and a card for hotels.

April, May and October. Rhododendrons flower in spring, and autumn gives the clearest mountain views.
